Lee Miller in Fashion is the first book to examine how her career as a model and fashion photographer illuminates her life story and connects to international fashion history from the late 1920s until the early 1950s. ![]() Miller was recognized as “one of the most distinguished living photographers” during her hey-day as a fashion photographer, but an astonishing number of these images have remained unpublished. Miller became a celebrated Surrealist under the tutelage of her lover, Man Ray, and then joined the war effort during World War II, documenting everything from the liberation of concentration camps to the daily life of Nazi-occupied Paris. Midcareer, she made the unprecedented transition from one side of the lens to the other, from a Condé Nast model in Jazz Age New York to fashion photographer, creating stunning images that imbued fashion with her signature wit and whimsy. She was a woman who refused to be penned in, a free spirit constantly on the move from New York to London to Paris, from husbands to lovers and back, from photojournalistic objectivism to surrealism. Fashion model, surrealist artist, muse, photographer, war correspondent-Lee Miller defies categorization. ![]() The night of tal bauer5/10/2023 ![]() When I look into your eyes, I feel an unusual serenity. When I am with you I get a feeling which I can never get with anyone else. I love you for the part of me that you bring out. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me. I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. When I am with you, I finally know what heaven on earth feels like. When I am with you, I feel invincible for your kind and loving presence strengthens me down to my very core. The mistress of this house on Granite Street didn’t even live here. Why buy a new sheet of price-tag stickers every four weeks when you can just keep the tables in place and pull the tarps off the caved-in boxes of cake decorating kits, Kenny Rogers cassette tapes and sad, ratty baby clothes which didn’t sell in June and probably won’t sell in July? It’s all about garage-sale economics, buster. Folks in this town are so thrifty, they even recycle their garage sales. It was like any number of perpetual “garage sales” that make monthly appearances in the Butte classified ads. ![]() I’d been to this house on Granite Street before. I was like Nancy Drew out to save the whales. I would get to the bottom of this mystery-why nobody wanted these books on their shelves anymore-and, what’s more, I would rescue the victims of neglect. ![]() Other than that, I was 100 percent amateur detective, on the hunt for orphaned, abandoned, no-longer-loved books. Except that I was 48 years old, had a penis, and lacked a boyfriend named Ned waiting for me at the curb in his jalopy. Combing through the back room of the old lady’s house, picking through cardboard boxes of books that sighed puffs of dust, I felt like Nancy Drew. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Like many teens, Violet feels alone in her angst, describing the loss of her mother as a sign that she “couldn’t have nice things,” such as act in the upcoming school play or have a boyfriend or girlfriend, because “life wasn’t meant to be perfect” for her. The novel explores themes of mental illness and betrayal within a family with insight and empathy, and Urgo is excellent at describing the chaotic rhythms of teenagers in the 21st century, particularly those in the midst of extraordinary circumstances. Soon news reports and social media are speculating that her mother brought the plane down on purpose, or perhaps “US133 has been cyberhijacked by a remote foreign body,” even “perhaps a domestic threat.” Unlike her sister and father, who seem to accept that her mother is dead almost immediately, Violet stubbornly attempts to learn the truth of the plane’s disappearance, along the way uncovering a series of revelatory secrets which lead her to self-harm-an old habit she fights against. Urgo’s debut YA novel tells the story of a teenager surviving the sudden loss of her mother.Īt the opening of this powerful story of transformation and growth, set in present-day small-town New York, 16-year-old Violet McKenna Ashbyis working as a designer backstage for her high school’s latest theatrical performance when she learns that her mother, a commercial airline pilot, never came to the show-because her plane vanished. ![]() Illumination by Rowan Speedwell5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I can imagine the peace that I would find, and the comfort, of living alone on a lake with my parrot as company, doing work I love and not needing to spend time interacting with people. The stylized forms are almost more abstractions than representations (and why is the daisy yellow?). Bold, stylish, and indubitably inspired by real flowers, there is still (as with its predecessor) a link missing between these illustrations with their large, solid areas of color and the real experience of a garden. ![]() Unlike the vegetables, whose juxtaposed colors were almost painfully bright, the flowers make a splendidly gaudy array, first taken together and then interestingly grouped by color-the pages vary in size here so that colored strips down the right-hand side combine to make a broad rainbow.
