Shortly after the Dodgers left, Kearns' mother dies, and the family moved from the old neighborhood to an apartment on the other side of town. ![]() But in 1957 it all came to an abrupt end when the Dodgers (and the Giants) were forcibly uprooted from New York and transplanted to California. Never would there be a better time to be a Brooklyn Dodger fan. ![]() The narrative begins in 1949 at the dawn of a glorious era in baseball, an era that saw one of the three New York teams competing in the World Series every year, and era when the lineups on most teams remained basically intact year after year, allowing fans to extend loyalty and love to their chosen teams, knowing that for the most part, their favorite players would return the following year, exhibiting their familiar strengths, weaknesses, quirks, and habits. ![]() The neighborhood was equally divided among Dodger, Giant, and Yankee fans, and the corner stores were the scenes of fierce and affectionate rivalries. Wait Till Next Yearis the story of a young girl growing up in the suburbs of New York in the 1950s, when owning a single-family home on a tree-lined street meant the realization of dreams, when everyone knew everyone else on the block, and the children gathered in the streets to play from sunup to sundown. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And while I personally have no major (no huge) issues and complaints regarding the fact that the text is presented by Vera B. The accompanying narrative of More More More Said the Baby reads sweetly and humorously, but also often rather tediously, with an unnatural and painfully awkward lyricism (and is actually also kind of hard to read at times, as it seems to blend right into the illustrations, somewhat reducing reading ease, especially if one requires reading glasses or has even minor issues with visual contrast). And while I would not necessarily call them inappropriate, especially the picture of the father repeatedly kissing his little boy on his exposed belly button leaves a rather strange taste in my mouth, as does the depiction of the grandmother "tasting" Little Pumpkin's toes (now don't get me wrong, I actually do not think there is anything wrong with these behaviours themselves, but the visuals, the pictures of said actions, feel a bit uncanny and potentially disturbing, at least for me). Yes, the illustrations are definitely bright, colourful and full of joyful movement, but frankly, I find some of them weird, creepy and strange in nature. Williams' More More More Said the Baby won a Caldecott Honour Medal, but personally, I just do not like either the text or the accompanying illustrations all that much (I guess can to a certain point appreciate both effort and sentiment, but the end product of More More More Said the Baby feels rather majorly lacking to and for me). ![]() Undefeated book steve sheinkin5/13/2023 ![]() government’s violent persecution of Native Americans and the school that was designed to erase Indian cultures. The reporter started to question how power in government really works. A couple of weeks after state officials had told Caro they would never back the project, Moses visited Albany, and suddenly the officials had a change of tune. Moses 1914GSAS, ’52HON, the New York City parks commissioner and head of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, was the mastermind behind the bridge, as well as numerous other bridges, expressways, parks, public beaches, and housing developments built since the 1920s. Caro told his editors that the project was dead on arrival. Most state-government officials, including Governor Nelson Rockefeller, thought the bridge was a terrible idea it would make traffic jams worse, not better, and pollute the Long Island Sound. In 1965, Robert Caro ’68JRN, a bright-eyed Newsday reporter with an itch to uncover political corruption, was assigned to look into a controversial plan to build a six-mile-long bridge between Rye, New York, in Westchester County, and Long Island’s Oyster Bay. ![]() Oracle bones by peter hessler5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Painlessly, you come to understand the complexity of the Chinese alphabet and the complexity of U.S./Chinese relations. Let's face it, who would want to read an entire chapter about the Chinese alphabet? But Hessler shows Chinese characters throughout the story, over the course of many chapters. The structure is delightfully informal and informative. With "Oracle Bones," Hessler again manages to take a huge country with a huge history and define it in a series of interwoven stories. ![]() Yet this is much more than a collection of reprints, and it is also more than a travelog. So in one sense, his new book "Oracle Bones" is a reprise of articles he has already published. He came to teach English in the Peace Corps and ended up writing a book called "River Town." He went on to write for The New Yorker, National Geographic, the Chicago Tribune, the Boston Globe, etc. Peter Hessler has lived in China for 10 years. ![]() "ORACLE BONES," by Peter Hessler HarperCollins 491 pages. ![]() A-Force (2015) #2 by G. Willow Wilson5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() This cautionary tale is expertly re-explained (different crime) but eats up a bulk of pages all the same. For anyone familiar with the core series, it is evident that if one breaks any of Doom’s laws, one goes to the Wall-like Shield to defend Battleworld from the zombies, killer robots and giant space bugs beyond. The story is solid enough but much of its detriment owes to paralleling many beats from last week’s Secret Wars #2. Of course, it is in the name of God Emperor Doctor Doom, so take that for what it’s worth. While considerably more nuanced, the debut issue of Marvel’s loosely-based all-ladies Avengers squad also succumbs to being a quasi-amorphous mass of capes doling out a public service announcement. Remember the cartoon “Super-Friends”? If not, the Saturday Morning staple of the 1970s and 80s saw DC Comics’ heavyweights imposingly handing down life lessons on an episodic basis. ![]() |
